How much silver should you own?

There's no magic number. But there is a sensible order of operations, and a few questions that keep you from overbuying.

By Prepper Metals Editorial · Updated October 2026 · Editorial standards

Start with the basics first

Metals are not an emergency fund. Before buying any silver, most preparedness plans cover:

  1. Water, food and medical supplies for your household
  2. Some cash at home for short-term outages
  3. An emergency savings fund in the bank
  4. Paying down high-interest debt

Decide what the silver is for

Goal 1

Small-trade reserve

A modest amount of junk silver or 1 oz coins for small, recognizable units in a disruption. Many preppers start here.

Goal 2

Long-term savings

Holding metal as part of long-term savings. This is where costs, storage and liquidity matter most.

Goal 3

Retirement account

Who can help you decide

How much of your savings to hold in metals is a personal financial decision, and it isn't one we can make for you. A fee-only financial planner or other licensed professional can look at your whole situation. What we can do is explain the practical side: storage, insurance, costs and how easy it is to sell.

Practical limits to consider

  • Storage: silver is bulky. Do you have a safe that fits it?
  • Insurance: will your policy cover it?
  • Liquidity: could you sell quickly if you needed cash, and at what spread?
  • Costs: premiums and spreads mean you start slightly behind on every purchase.
Learn the process first. Before a larger purchase, many people start with a few coins to learn how pricing, premiums, shipping and storage work in practice.
